In 2025, the vibrant festival of Onam will commence on 26 August and conclude on 5 September, with Thiruvonam—the most auspicious and significant day—falling on Friday, 5 September.
Waking up to the vibrant colors of Pookalam (intricate floral designs arranged outside homes), seeing men dressed in traditional mundu, and women adorned in elegant Kasavu sarees, is a visual and cultural delight. It's a time when Kerala comes alive, and many Malayalis living outside the state long to be part of these joyful moments.
Onam is rooted in the Malayalam lunar calendar, particularly in the month of Chingam. The celebrations culminate on the day when the Thiruvonam star (Nakshatra) shines brightest, symbolizing the homecoming of the mythical King Mahabali, under whose reign Kerala was believed to be at its most prosperous and harmonious.
The festival spans ten days, each carrying its own cultural and spiritual significance—marked by unique rituals, traditional decorations, cultural performances, and culinary delights.
