Chaitra Amavasya

Chaitra Amavasya is the first amavasya in the Hindi calendar, making it very important for big life decisions and spiritual activities. This day is believed to help remove pain and negativity. Hindus worship Lord Vishnu on Chaitra Amavasya. On Chaitra Amavasya, people usually fast to honor their ancestors. Here are the rituals to follow:

  • Wake up early and take a bath in a holy river, lake, or pond. Offer water to the Sun while saying prayers.
  • Fast and give to the poor to help your ancestors have peace in the afterlife.
  • Feed the poor or Brahmins after performing the Pitru Shradh.
  • After Shradh, offer food to Brahmins, the poor, cows, dogs, crows, and small children.
  • In the evening, place a mustard oil lamp under the Peepal tree. You can also offer blue flowers, black sesame seeds, black clothes, Urad dal, and mustard oil at the Shani temple.
