This festival happens on the same day as Ugadi, which is celebrated in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Both festivals share similar cultural and religious meanings.

Gudi Padwa symbolizes new beginnings, prosperity, and victory. It is believed that on this day, Lord Brahma created the universe, starting the measure of time. It also celebrates Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana, representing the victory of good over evil.
For many people in Maharashtra, it also marks the victory of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the founding of the Maratha Empire. The Gudi (flag) raised outside homes stands for success, power, and divine blessings.
Gudi Padwa starts with an oil bath, an important ritual in Hindu beliefs. People also eat neem leaves, which are thought to cleanse the body and boost health. Families cook special meals and decorate their homes with colorful rangoli designs.
One important tradition is raising the 'Gudi,' a decorated flag made with bright cloth, neem leaves, mango leaves, and a garland of sugar crystals. The Gudi is topped with an upside-down silver or copper pot and placed at the entrance of homes. It symbolizes victory and prosperity, showing the triumph of good over evil.
While Gudi Padwa is mainly celebrated in Maharashtra and Goa, similar festivals are held in different parts of India:
