History and Significance of Navratri

Navratri 2025 has a rich history rooted in Hindu scriptures, which provide two main ways of its origin.

  • One version recounts how Mahishasura, the demon king, waged war against the Gods. In response, Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, and other deities combined their powers to create Shakti, known as 'Devi Durga.' Goddess Durga ultimately defeated Mahishasura after a fierce nine-day battle. The tenth day, known as Vijaya Dashami, commemorates this victory, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.
  • The second account is derived from the Ramayana, where Lord Rama upholds dharma by defeating Ravana, the king of Lanka, in order to rescue Devi Sita. Before engaging in battle, Lord Rama worshipped Goddess Durga for her blessings over the course of nine days. In his devotion, Rama needed 108 lotuses for his worship. When he was prepared to sacrifice one of his eyes to fulfill this requirement, Goddess Durga appeared and blessed him with her divine power. Following an intense confrontation with Ravana, Rama emerged victorious on Vijayadasami, which is celebrated as Dussehra.

These two historical narratives form the basis for the celebration of Navratri. During this festival, it is believed that Devi Durga returns to Earth. The significance of Navratri 2025 is heightened by the anticipation of her arrival, which people will joyfully commemorate.
