Ram Navami, also known as Shri Ram Janmotsav, is a Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Rama, the seventh avatar of Vishnu. It is observed on the ninth day of the Chaitra month, which falls on April 6, 2025.
Celebrations:
Devotees of Shri Ram observe a day-long fast and engage in prayer and worship of Lord Rama, along with Sita, Lakshman, and Hanuman. They recite passages from the Ramayana and other scriptures, and Ramlilas (dramatic reenactments of Rama's story) are performed.
The festival features grand aartis, processions, and bhandaras (community feasts) and is marked by decoration with lights and flowers, inviting devotees to offer their prayers.
Charity and bhajans (devotional songs) are performed continuously for 24 hours on this day. Additionally, Hawana, Homa, or Yajna, the religious ritual involving sacrificial fire, is conducted.
The akhand Ramayana path (recital of the Ramayana for 24 hours) takes place, and the deity is adorned with flowers, fragrances, new attire, and jewelry. This includes Shri Ram along with the idols of Lakshmana and Sita.
Festive Spirit:
- Processions (Rath Yatras): The Shri Ram temple in Kamarpal hosts amazing processions called Rath Yatras. Big chariots carrying statues of Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman are pulled through the streets, while music and dance fill the air. Many devotees gather, singing and throwing flowers at the chariots.
- Street Decorations: Streets and public places are decorated with colorful flags, banners, and banana leaves. Homes may also be decorated with lights and rangolis, creating a joyful atmosphere.
Charitable Acts:
- Food Distribution (Langar): Langars are community kitchens that provide free vegetarian meals to everyone, especially those in need. This reflects the idea of service and highlights the importance of sharing and helping others.

Prasadam Distribution: After the worship rituals, sweet dishes are offered as prasadam (offerings to the deity).

Seviyan Kheer: A sweet pudding made with vermicelli, milk, sugar, and nuts.

Halwa: A rich pudding that can be made with semolina, flour, vegetables, or fruits.

Coconut Ladoo: Sweet balls made with coconut, sugar, and ghee.

Cultural Performances:
- Ramlila Enactments: The story of the Ramayana is performed dramatically in events called Ramlila. These outdoor shows can last for several days, with actors playing characters from the story.
- Akhand Ramayana path: A continuous reading of the Ramayana for 24 hours at the temple during Ram Navami. After this, there is a ritual called Hawana or Homa, which involves a sacred fire ceremony at the temple.
- Bhajan and Kirtan: Singing devotional songs for 24 hours straight.
